While the number of Covid-19 cases rises gradually, companies and nations around the world are deploying blockchain technology to fight this pandemic.

Technology companies have an important role to play during times like these, and it seems that they have stepped up their efforts recently.

Employees working for companies or projects that are actively engaged in blockchain applications, believe that by connecting health care practitioners to pharma companies through a blockchain application, they could achieve a faster and more reliable distribution of health care equipment and resources (i.e. IBM’s Rapid Supplier Connect).

The value of blockchain technology lies on the severity of this situation, which requires rapid and effective measures using tools that facilitate the quick communication and action without margin for errors.

China, as an example, used blockchain to receive donations, to locate covid-19 cases , to support the supply chain of medical supplies and organise medical programs.

The platform initiated by start-up Hyperchain and China Xiong’an Group, recorded 500 donations during a short period of time. This solution was ideal under the circumstances, as this greatly restored the confidence of the citizens, showing that their donations were not being used for other illegitimate purposes.

One of the most effective uses of blockchain in the fight against covid-19 is to locate individuals who have been infected with the virus. Many companies are currently working on such a program based on blockchain technology. This program will also be able to know which people have recovered from Covid-19 and therefore, they can use various services, as it is unlikely to further spread the virus.

An interesting project, MiPasa has been developed by a co operation between the US, EU, China, Canada and Hong Kong. MiPasa, developed an application based on blockchain, that enables a swift and more precise early detection of COVID-19 carriers and infection hotspots through seamless and fully private information sharing between individuals, state authorities and health institutions such as hospitals and HMOs, utilizing advanced technological tools and a dedicated user app.

All the above mentioned projects, show that, although Covid-19, has drawn a dark page on the human history, it pushed and brought rapid developments on the blockchain world and usage around the world.
